Day 2

We left Playa Estrella the morning of the 21st and headed south. We drove south to the small fishing community of Puertecitos. They have some hot springs there I wanted to test out! They are salt water hot springs that are exposed when the tide goes out and are often more than 100 degrees. When we arrived the tide was out and there were a few revelers in the springs, but the temps were already nearing 90 degrees that morning and the hot springs were not sounding so refreshing!

We then headed south to a nice point just south of Volcan Prieto, a place my friend Chris and I camped at two years earlier. We stopped here had some lunch and did some exploring. There were millions of sea fleas running all over the rocks on the beach. Some sort of small isopods, not sure what they were really.

The tide was out, so lots of cool rocks were exposed.

We made it down to Punta Bufeo around lunchtime and stopped at Allen's house, a friend from one of my internet discussion boards. We had not met before, only talked through email and the discussion board. He and his wife Diana showed us their beautiful house on the beach and we sat and visited and drank some cold cervezas for an hour or so! His house is fully powered by solar panels with propane as a backup. They have quite the set up! Allen and Diana used to live in Santa Fe and we talked about New Mesxico a lot. They offered us some lunch, but we wanted to get going south.

We said our goodbyes and headed south. We drove around Gonzaga Bay admiring the airplanes and cool vehicles there. After a quick snack and beer at Alfonsina's, we again took off. We stopped at Cocos corner for a couple minutes and had a couple beers with him. He's a weird old man to say the least. I've heard that he made his own wooden leg, but I didn't have the nerve to ask him about it! We thought we could make Bay of LA by dark so we hit the road. The pavement at Chapala was a welcome site after 2 days of wash boarded dirt roads!

About half way down the Bay of LA road we ran into our first snake. A nice looking red diamondback on the road. We moved him off the pavement and snapped a few pictures.

We also caught a nice patchnose snake (pictures in the main album). We made it to Camp Gecko (www.campgecko.com) around dusk and rented a nice cabin/palapa for 20 bucks. A great way to end the day, drinking beer and watching the sun set.
